Our excitement for the Assassin's Creed film has just increased.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures's CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet has compared the video game adaptation to two notable films to whet the appetite.

With Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, can Michael Fassbender and Duncan Jones redeem the video game movie?

"We have an enormous brand and we want to make a film modelled on features like Batman Begins or Blade Runner," he told French film magazine Premiere (via Den of Geek).

Barronet also revealed that the film's star Michael Fassbender will be brought into all the "key creative choices" and that while the film will have a dark tone, there will also be some "lightness".

Compared to the video game, the film will reportedly focus more on its sci-fi angle with a more even split between past and present scenes. Fassbender is playing two characters separated by time.

"It was complicated to develop, because you're working with two time periods," Barronet explained. "And with the link between the past and the present, you can't have one of the stories taking precedence over the other."

The newest game in the franchise, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, is set in Victorian London and comes out on October 23 this year

He concluded by saying that the aim is for the film to work for three audiences: fans of the game, of mainstream cinema and of independent films.

Assassin's Creed sees Fassbender reunited with his Macbeth director Justin Kurzel and co-star Marion Cotillard.

Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson recently joined the cast of the film, which is currently shooting.

It is due for release in the US on December 21, 2016 and in the UK on December 30, 2016.
